Dear DIY Today,

My toilet is leaking from the base. I checked to make sure it just wasn't condensation building up on the tank and dripping to the floor. How do I go about changing the wax seal?

Repairing the wax seal for the toilet is not difficult project. You can have it done in less than an hour and your toilet won't be leaking anymore from it's base.

Before you get started you need to shut off the water supply to the toilet. Next flush the toilet to release all of the water from the tank and bowl.

Next you need to disconnect the water supply leading to the toilet. This tubing may be very thin so be careful when using your wrench to loosen it.

Next you need to loosen the bolts that attach the toilet to the floor. Be careful when loosening or tightening these bolts as not to crack the porcelain.

Okay, everything's disconnected and the toilet has no water in it. Now its time to install your new wax seal to the toilet. Lift the toilet off of the floor. You'll see the old wax ring that's at the bottom of the toilet or on the floor. Discard the old toilet wax seal and remove any debris. Now you simply install the new toilet wax seal and set the toilet back into it's original place. Reassemble the toilet being careful to not over tighten the bolts and damage the toilet. Once you have successfully installed the toilet wax seal give your toilet a flush or two and make sure it's not leaking.
