How To Stain A Concrete Patio

Has your patio become dull and boring? Does it need a facelift? Staining a concrete patio can add new life to it and make it more attractive. Not only that, but it's a do it yourself project that can be done easily.

Using acid concrete stain on your patio can make it look similar to marble or wood,  giving the patio a brown earth tone. The actual color will depend on the existing color and condition of your patio. It usually won't have a even tone and could even appear to have the texture of stone. It can be applied to new or old concrete.

When applied, the patio concrete stain will interact with the concrete properties and  the end result will be coloring. It's different that simply applying paint. Once done, it's easy to maintain and clean.

Before you get started you'll need to clean the concrete patio as you want to make sure the stain will penetrate the concrete. If your patio slab has been recently poured, you need to make sure it's cured before attempting to stain it. Rent a pressure washer and use a  good acid cleaner. You may have to put some elbow grease into it and scrub areas with a brush. Depending on the residue, you may also need to use a degreaser. After rinsing the entire area allow the concrete patio to thoroughly dry, at least 24 hours.

Make sure there is no rain in the weather forecast for the next 24 hours. Get down to your local home improvement store and choose the concrete stain that suits you. Before getting started be sure to wear protective clothing and goggles. You should also consider wearing a protective breathing mask. OK, you're ready to apply the stain to the concrete.

There is a couple of methods in applying the concrete stain to the slab. You can use a brush, working on smaller sections of the patio at a time. You could also use a paint roller attached with an extended handle. Make sure you spread the stain evenly, using long even strokes. Once you have the entire area covered allow it a good 24 hours to dry.

The next day go out and inspect your work. Are you happy with the results? Do you want a richer tone? If so, consider applying a second application. Don't forget to wax it to give it a nice, shiny gleam.

You're done! Stand back and enjoy the new look of your stained concrete patio. Break out your patio furniture, maybe even your barbeque grill, grab your favorite beverage, have a seat and relax - you deserve it!
