Do It Yourself Patio Design Ideas and Tips

So your ready for a new patio for your backyard. There are many patio design ideas to choose from. Here are some things to consider before designing and building your patio.

Location

If you live in a sunny area you may want to build your patio in a shaded area. The shade can come from your home or trees, depending on when and where the sun rises and sets. Although convenient, patios don't always need to be built next to the house. You could build one in a peaceful area of your yard and construct a beautiful walkway leading to it. Patio location is important - this is your oasis!

Patio Size and Shape

You need to consider what you'll primarily using the patio for. If you do a lot of entertaining you'll probably want a larger patio area.

How much patio furniture do you plan on using? Whatever you decide, make sure you have plenty of patio space for what you intend on using it for.

If you plan on building a circular patio or a patio with curved areas it will be more difficult and time consuming then a square or rectangular design.

Materials

There are many materials to consider when designing a patio. Think this over carefully as once you get started building your patio it's to late to change your mind.

Common patio materials include flagstone, tile, slate, brick, concrete pavers, bluestone, travertine pavers and more. If you have a creative touch, you don't have to build a patio using just one material type. You can use several to make an attractive blend. Go down to your local landscape or building materials store and look at some of these patio materials. Decide what will look best for your patio design. Keep in mind some materials carry a higher degree of difficulty when constructing a patio than others.

Accessorize Your Patio

Your patio doesn't need to be a boring slab of whatever material you choose to use. Add some accessories to it. How about a built in barbeque? Waterfalls and fountains add a touch of class and have a nice soothing effect. Are you a hot tub person? Construct your patio to include a space for one. Maybe you want to add sculpture for a elegant look. Need more shade or privacy? Think about a lattice cover and walls.

No matter what you decide, keep in mind this your place for relaxation. Make the right choices in your patio design and you'll enjoy it for years to come.
