How To Build A Flagstone Patio

Building a flagstone patio will require some elbow grease, but the average do it yourself person, with a helper, can do it on a weekend. It will be well worth your time and you will end up with a beautiful flagstone patio.

Keep in mind, this is going to be hard work as  flagstones can be heavy. Make sure to wear gloves to avoid cuts and scrapes and a back brace is not a bad idea either.

The first step in laying a flagstone patio is determining how much material you'll need. Decide on exactly where you are going to install the patio and measure the area in each direction. Multiply your measurements to get the total square feet. For the purposes of this tutorial, we'll assume you want a patio in a rectangular  shape.

Contact your home improvement store and they will help you determine how much flagstone you'll need based on your measurements.

You'll need to shovel your patio area to a depth of 4 inches. Using stakes and string, set up the perimeters of your flagstone patio. You want this to be level unless the patio is to be close to the house. In that situation you want it to slope about 1/4" per foot away from your home for drainage. Use a carpenters level to check your work.

Once you've shoveled your patio area, moisten the soil and tamp it down. Next, lay down visqueen or landscape fabric to prevent weeds from growing into your flagstone patio.

Spread sand into the area, about a depth of 1/2" to 2", depending on the thickness of your flagstone. Cut a piece of 2x4 to the same width of you patio to use as a screed. With the assistance of your helper, slide the 2x4 over the top of the sand to level it. Try to do this in one continuous motion. Tamp the sand and check to make sure it's level.

Begin laying the flagstone. You can level it by subtracting or adding sand and tamping it securely into place. Try to keep any gaps to a minimum. Once all flagstones are installed, fill the gaps with remaining sand and tamp as necessary. Using a broom, sweep the sand from all flagstone. Finally, wet the new patio with water but don't soak it.

You're done! Break out your patio furniture and enjoy!
