Want to kick up your patio a couple of notches?
Adding a tile surface to your patio will do just that. Tile patios have a
touch of class and you'll be the envy of your friends and neighbors. This is a
do it yourself project the average person can do on a weekend. Ready to get started? The first thing to do is to clean the existing concrete patio. Head down to your local rental store and rent a power washer. Completely clean your patio and allow it to thoroughly dry. You'll need to measure your patio to determine how many square feet of tile you'll need. When laying the tiles, you want to make sure you'll be making your cuts only on one end of the patio. |

Start in a corner, laying tiles along the edge of the patio, using a spacer. Don't use any mortar yet. We are still measuring. Keep going until you reach the end of the patio. You'll have to do this for both the length and width of the patio slab. The tiles at the end of the patio will be the ones needing cut. Prepare the mortar per manufacturers instructions. Use a drill with a mixer attachment to mix the mortar.
Using a trowel, spread the mortar in an area within arms reach along the edge of the patio. You should be starting from a corner. Begin laying tiles and wipe any excess mortar from the tile. Press firmly to allow the tiles to set into the mortar. Use spacers between tiles to establish the grout lines. Continue this process until you have finished the first row. Make your cuts using a tile saw and continue laying tile until the entire patio has been covered. Allow the mortar to completely set before going any further. Using a bucket, mix the grout according to manufacturers directions. Apply the grout by removing the spacers. Make sure to immediately wipe any grout that makes contact with the surface of the tiles. Also, make sure the grout is packed into the joints by using a joint tool.
From time to time, take a look at your work. Make sure to clean any excess grout from the joints and tile surfaces.
That's it! Making a tile patio is somewhat time
consuming but in the long run, you'll agree it's well worth the effort.
