How To Resurface A Patio

Before you can resurface your old patio with concrete you need to prep it:

Try to do this on a day where the weather is not too hot and when it's not expected to rain.

Items needed:

Wheelbarrow or 5 gallon bucket
Duct Tape
Resurfacing Mix
Water
Broom
Masonry Brush
Masonry Trowel

Break away any old mortar that is loose or cracked with a chisel. Your patio needs to be clean for the new concrete to adhere.

Sweep all dirt and debris off the patio. You should clean it with power washer. You should be able  to find one at your local rental store. Allow the patio surface to completely dry.

Fill any holes or cracks with a epoxy or a patching compound. Wipe off excess and allow to completely dry until it is set. Once dry, you should use some duct tape over the control joints so they don't get filled in.

Go over your patio with a broom, removing any other dirt that may have been accumulated. Once done wet down the patio surface with water. You can mix your resurfacer using a wheel borrow (my preference) or a 5 gallon bucket. Use the manufacturers instructions. Once it's thoroughly mixed, it's time to apply the mixture.

Don't try to add too much at one time. Start off with a coat about 1/4" of thickness. If you want a thicker coating it will have to be applied in layers. Be sure to allow each layer to completely dry before adding a new one.

Shovel the new concrete onto the patio and spread it using a masonry trowel. Try to work on smaller areas of the patio, one area at a time. Once your patio is completely covered with the resurfacing mix allow it to completely dry before walking on it.

Hint: If you want a rougher surface to help prevent slips when it's wet, apply a masonry brush to the surface before it dries.
