How To Build A Brick Patio

Using brick pavers in building a small patio is a project the average do it yourselfer can do over a weekend.

This is what you'll need to build your brick patio:

Visqueen (Ground Cover)
Shovel
Paving Bricks
Sand or Gravel
Broom
Stakes
Twine
Measuring Tape
Masons Line
Level
Rubber Mallet

The first thing you'll need to do is to decide on where you'll be laying your paving brick patio and how large it will be. Using your twine and stakes, set up the area that your patio will be installed. Using a tape measure, calculate the square footage of the area.

Now that you have the dimensions, you can figure how many bricks you'll need. Your local home improvement store can help you calculate this. For a conventional brick patio, you'll want 4" X 8" paving bricks. The thickness should be between 2" to 2 1/4".

The ground needs to be level. With your shovel, you need to dig the area out. When digging, be sure to allow an extra 2" completely around the perimeter to allow for the edging. Make sure it slopes slightly from the house to allow for drainage. The slope should ideally be at an angle of about 1/4" and no more than 1/3" per foot. Use your level to check your work.

The next step is to lay down the visqueen. This will prevent weeds from growing through the spaces between the bricks. The final step in preparing the base for your brick patio is laying sand or gravel on top of the visqueen to a level of about 3 inches deep. Spread it evenly, using a hoe and a level to maintain your drainage slope as described above.

Start laying the bricks around the perimeter to make a edge. Place the bricks on their sides and using a rubber mallet, tap them into place, making sure each brick fits snuggly along side of the other brick. Once you have the perimeter done, you can now start laying the paving bricks. Pick a corner to start from and lay down the bricks. No matter what pattern you use, make sure the height of the bricks are the same. Use your rubber mallet to set them into place. Check your work using a mason's line to ensure it's even.

After you have finished laying the bricks, use your level to make sure you've maintained your slope. Again, you can use a rubber mallet to make adjustments. If necessary you may need to add or remove the sand or gravel.

You're done! Use your broom to clean your new brick patio!
