Most of us have some form of heating and cooling
system in our home. Over half of us use natural gas though there are many
different types of fuel available. Did you realize that your home heating and cooling system uses more power and costs more than any other system in your house? Heating and cooling will generally account for about 45% of your annual utility bill. And a shocking fact is that our heating and cooling systems in the United States alone emits over 150 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. This of course has a negative impact on our environment and influences global climate change. |

Not only this, but they also produce 12% of the
USA's sulfur dioxide and 4% of the nitrogen oxides emissions, which
incorporate into acid rain. The following simple tips can reduce our emissions and save you money on your utility bills. 1) This may seem obvious but many people ignore this simple step - turn your system temperature as low as is comfortable in the cold months and as high as is comfortable during the warm months. 2) Install heat-resistant radiator reflectors between your radiator and the exterior wall. 3) Remember to clean (or replace) your furnace filters once a month or more often if required. 4) Remember to clean your warm-air registers, radiators and baseboard heaters, often. Ensure they're not blocked by furniture or curtains, so the air can flow. 5) Ensure that trapped air from hot-water radiators are bleed once or twice a season. You many need to have a professional show you how. 6) Turn off exhaust fans, including kitchen and bathroom within 20 minutes of use. And next time you replace them, look at getting a high-efficiency model. 7) This is an easy yet often overlooked step. When trying to keep your home warm, open your drapes and shades on the sunny side of your home during the day to allow the sunlight to warm your home. Be sure to close them up tight as soon as the sun leaves the window to prevent the night chill from undoing the sun’s good work. 8) During the warm/hot months of the year, the opposite is appropriate. Keep your drapes pulled tight during the day to prevent your home from heating up. We find that if we do this and then open the drapes and windows up at night; we get sufficient cooling to keep the house cool during the next day. 9) When replacing appliances and heating/cooling systems choose products with a high energy efficiency rating. By following these basic steps and undertaking equipment maintenance, installing appropriate insulation, fixing air leeks and managing thermostat settings, you can cut your energy use for heating and cooling, and reduce environmental emissions, from 20% to 50%.
