How To Measure For A Garage Door

The measurements required for a new garage door will vary from different garage door manufacturers. These are the general guidelines needed to properly measure for a garage door:

Headroom

The area between the ceiling and the top of the door opening is called "headroom". This is the area where to torsion spring will be installed. If you're installing a garage door opener it will usually require additional headroom. It is measured from the jamb header to the floor joist or the first obstruction.

Sideroom

These are the walls on each side of the garage opening. Usually a minimum of 3 3/4" is needed, but that may vary. This is the area where the vertical track and extension spring is installed.

Garage Door Opening

Generally speaking, the rough opening should be the same size as the door you intend to install. From the inside of the jamb, measure the area in feet and inches. First measure the width from inside jamb and go across to the other jamb.  It's a good idea to measure down the middle of the jamb also, just to make sure the measurements are consistent and the opening is square. To measure height, start at the bottom of the header and down to the floor.

Backroom

This is the area where the garage door track, and automatic opener (if you're using one) are installed. This is measured from the garage door opening to the rear of the garage. Usually door height plus 18" is needed. Again, that depends on the door manufacturer. If you're installing a garage door opener, additional space will be needed, usually about 4 feet or so.

Other Considerations

Look for ductwork, lighting or pipes that might interfere with the installation of the door. Take a look at the garage door framework. Are jambs square and the header level and stable. Is the wood in good condition? This is important as it will be supporting the heaviest moving object in the home.
