How To Repair A Garage Door
DIY Troubleshooting Tips And Advice

Having a tough time getting that garage door to open or shut? Usually repairing a garage door is a do it yourself project the average person can deal with. There are several possible reasons why your garage door is not functioning properly.

Here are a few troubleshooting tips and advice that may help you to repair your garage door:

Is your garage door hard to open or shut? If you have a automatic garage door opener installed, try disengaging it by pulling the emergency release cord. Now, try to open the door manually. If the garage door opens and closes easily that's your problem. Working on a garage door opener is covered in another section of this website or you can look at your owners manual.

When is the last time you lubricated the rollers and hinges? Before oiling them make sure the tracks are cleaned out. Over the years they collect dirt and debris. Usually household cleaners will do the trick. Once done, apply a good lubricant to the moving parts. Try opening and closing the garage door to see if that helped solve the problem.

Take a look at the garage door tracks. These will bind if not aligned properly. Are the screws and bolts tight. If not, try tightening them to bring the tracks back into alignment. One or two loose screws can easily cause the track to get out of alignment.

On roll up garage doors, take a look at the hinges. Check to see that they are still mounted securely. Tighten as needed. Loose hinges can cause the garage door to not open or closed evenly.

Inspect the springs. On roll up garage doors they are located at the right and left of the opening. If they are worn you'll need to replace them. That's also a good time to replace rollers and hinges if needed. You can find out how to replace the springs in another section of this website.

These are the main reasons for your garage door not operating properly. Try these troubleshooting tips to repair your garage door before calling a professional. You just might save yourself some money!
