How To Repair Or Replace Garage Door Rollers
Garage door rollers sometimes come out of the
track or they just get plain old, maybe rusty and don't function any longer. Replacing
garage door rollers is not a difficult task, but keep in mind garage doors are
heavy so make sure you have a helper. Don't forget to wear protective clothing
and eye gear. First you'll need to open the garage door as high as you can to relieve tension on the springs. You can use a 2x4 under the garage door for support or you can use locking pliers or a c-clamp by firmly attaching it a few inches under the bottom roller. This will keep the garage door from coming down. I would recommend turning off the power supply to the garage door opener at this point. |

If the hinges are old or rusted use some penetrating oil to loosen the bolts. Start by removing the hinges, one at a time. Depending on your garage door, your helper may need to help support the garage door to keep if from sagging or bending down. You'll need to remove the bolt by loosening the nut attached to it. Once the nut has been removed you can use a hammer to tap the bolt out, if necessary. To remove the garage door roller, tilt the hinge from the door. To install the roller, it needs to be placed in the original hole. Install the roller at an angle and slide it back into the track. Reinstall the hinges as above, only in reverse order. When replacing garage door rollers you should consider buying new hinges as well. You may need to take one with you to the hardware store to make sure it's an exact match.
Make sure all nuts are tightened securely and remove any locking pliers, bracing and clamps, depending on what you used. Turn on the power source to your garage door opener, if you have one and test out your new rollers. IMPORTANT: Before doing any work you should know the potential dangers.
