How To Measure Your Fireplace For Glass Doors

Fireplaces generally are one of two types. One is the masonry, build with brick or stone. The other a zero-clearance which are made in a factory. Once you've determined your type of fireplace than you can measure for the glass doors. These are general guidelines only and are not intended to replace the manufacturers instructions.

Rectangular Masonry Fireplace

If your fireplace door will fit flush inside the opening you'll need to measure for a inside fit.

Measure from inside of the fireplace opening. First measure the height on both sides and record it. Make sure you are within 1/16" and you are using a steel tape. Next, measure the width, once from the top and again from the bottom. Okay, you now have two separate measurements. Use the smaller one and deduct an additional 1/8" from the height and width.

If your fireplace door will be mounted on the outside of the fireplace opening you will need to measure for a outside fit (overlap fit). Measure as above. Use the larger measurement and add 1 1/2" to the width and height.

Prefabricated Zero-Clearance Fireplace

Measure the fireplace opening where the glass door will be installed.

Measure the height on both sides and the width on both sides. Keep in mind if there are any objects that will interfere with the track (such as the old track or screws) they will need to be removed. Measure as if these objects didn't exist.

Tip: Make sure the manufacturer of the fireplace carries a glass door for your fireplace.
