Do It Yourself Chimney Sweeping

Cleaning your chimney is a project you can do yourself, if you don't mind getting dirty. Soot and creosote need to be removed from the chimney to reduce the chance of a fire and to improve air flow. Yes, sweeping a chimney can be messy business but you can save yourself some money in the long run. You'll need to buy a brush and rods for chimney cleaning which costs about the same as hiring a professional chimney sweep, but you'll be able to use them year after year.

Select the right brush and rod:

The brush needs to be matched to the size of the flue tiles. The fiberglass rod will come in sections that screw together. Measure the height of the chimney and the size of the flue tiles before making your purchase.

Clean the chimney:

1. Wear old clothing, a dust mask and goggles.

2. The fireplace opening needs to be sealed with plastic sheeting and tape. Make sure it's securely attached. If your fireplace has a glass door, seal the gaps with tape.

3. At the top of the chimney, remove the chimney cap.

4. Push the rod down the chimney a couple of feet at a time and clean all areas of the chimney. The fiberglass rods will bend to allow for any curves in the chimney. Repeat this process until the chimney is thoroughly cleaned.

5. Reattach the chimney cap.

6. Carefully remove the plastic sheeting from the fireplace opening and clean out the fireplace.

7. Clean the rod and brush and store for future use.
