How To Stop Fireplace Smoke From
Backing Into Your House

Repairing a smoky fireplace is very important. The smoke that fills your room is dangerous to your health and can damage your homes interior and furniture. When smoke from a fireplace enters a room, also known as back puffing, you need to find a solution to remedy it.

Remedies for fireplace smoke backing up into a room:

1. A fireplace must have adequate air flow. Try turning off any exhaust fans in the home. They could be pulling air away from the fireplace. When the air flow reverses the fireplace won't ventilate properly.

2. The flue may need replaced. If it's too small it's not going to allow adequate ventilation. Unfortunately this is not a do it yourself project.

3. If your fireplace is emitting smoke into your room on windy days you most likely will need a wind chimney cap. This will prevent the wind from pushing the fireplace smoke back down into your home.

4. You could install a chimney fan. The manufacturers of these products guarantee it will stop any smoke from entering your room. They are mounted at the top of the chimney and pull the exhaust out.

5. The size of the fireplace opening can be reduced by adding a smoke guard. Measure the opening of the fireplace, multiplying width by height. This is a shield that is made in various sizes and can be purchased from a fireplace shop.
