How to Repair Damaged Fireplace Mortar |

Fireplace mortar can deteriorate over the years
and eventually needs repaired. Cracks in the mortar can create safety issues,
not to mention they can be unattractive. Steps needed to repair cracked, damaged fireplace mortar: 1. Wear a dust mask and protective goggles. Using a wire brush, scrape the loose crumbling mortar. Make sure all loose mortar has been removed. 2. Wipe any excess dust and mortar particles off with a wet towel. 3. Prepare the surface by brushing water into the joints. 4. Mix the mortar following the manufacturers instructions. Make sure you purchase a fireplace rated mortar. 5. Pack the mortar into the joints using a trowel. Make sure it's pushed deeply into the mortar so it's fully packed. Repeat the process if necessary. 6. Taking care not to touch the fresh mortar, wipe any excess from the bricks. 7. Allow to completely dry and cure before using the fireplace. |
