How To Install A Fireplace Insert

Are you tired of all of the heat going right up the chimney? Installing a fireplace insert can help you save on your heating bill and make your fireplace much more energy efficient.

General steps required in installing a fireplace insert:

1. The fireplace should be clean. Have the chimney swept. Use a brush to remove build up soot and dirt. Make sure to wear a dust mask and goggles.

2. The floor needs to be protected. If it doesn't have a protective surface, such as brick, granite, etc. you'll need to install it before going any further.

3. Measure for your fireplace insert. From inside the firebox, measure all three dimensions - depth, width and height. Leave a space of 1/4" to allow for the insert to expand when it's hot.

4. So you won't damage the hearth, place a sheet of plywood on top of it. Next position your fireplace insert onto the plywood and slide it into the fireplace opening and use a measure tape to make sure it's centered. Remove the plywood.

5. From the top of the chimney, remove the chimney cap. If you don't have one you should get one. Slide the flue liner into the flue collar adapter on top of the insert. Attach the liner to the collar with rust proof screws and a retaining ring. Get back on the roof. Cut the excess liner from the top of the chimney. Check the flashing for damage and seal with a good caulk if necessary. Reattach the chimney cap. If it's worn, now's a good time to replace it.

6. Following the manufacturers instructions, attach the insert to the fireplace opening. This involves attaching the side panels and top extender panel and applying a chimney caulk to seal it.

7. Install the facing for the fireplace insert.
