How To Connect Dishwasher Wiring

If you are replacing your dishwasher, these are the steps need to wire it to the power source. These instructions are intended for replacing your dishwasher only. A  new dishwasher requires a separate circuit that will require an electrician to install into your circuit panel and the wires will need to be installed into the wall cavities (this is called fishing). Since you are replacing your dishwasher, you already have a dedicated circuit.

Before getting started, be sure the power source to the existing dishwasher is turned off from the breaker in the circuit panel. If your not sure, turn off the power to the entire house from the main circuit.

1. Look for the junction box at the rear of the dishwasher. Using a screwdriver, take off the cover. Next, remove the knockout area using needlenose pliers or a punch.

2. The wiring needs to be stripped and connected. Remove about 4 to 6 inches of the cable sheathing and trim the excess. Use a wire stripper to remove the insulation from the wires, leaving about 3/4" of bare wire on the ends.

3. The cable needs to be pulled to the junction box. Use a cable clamp to secure it to the box and make sure it's fastened tightly over the sheathed area. Hint: Leave extra cable behind the dishwasher. If you need to work on it in the future it will make things easier.

4. If dishwasher has the green or bare ground wire connect it by twisting it using a wire connector. If it doesn't have the ground wire you'll need to connect it to the ground terminal in the junction box. Follow the same procedure for the black (hot) wires and the white (neutral wires), twisting them securely with wire connectors. Use some electrical tape and wrap each connection for safety.

Note: Before splicing the wiring, make sure the bare areas are shiny and cleaned.

5. Place the cover back on the junction box.

6. Carefully slide your dishwasher back into place making sure the excess cable is not pinched in the process.
