How To Join Electrical Wires Using Connectors

 StarbucksStore.com

Connecting or joining two or more wires is a simple task for the average do it yourself person. Wire connectors will protect your wiring from touching other wires and prevent short circuits, thus making sure your wiring is functioning properly.

Wires are color coded to help you make a match. Twist on connectors are also color coded, indicating the number of wires they can accommodate.

1. Turn off the power source leading to the wiring you are connecting.

1. Strip about 1/2" of the wiring insulation with a wire stripper.

3. It's recommended that you start with the ground wires first. Align the wires evenly and twist them with pliers, starting at the bare ends.

4. Make sure you are connecting one set of wires at a time, matching the color code of the wiring.

5. Find the appropriate size wire connector (wire nut)  based the gauge of the wiring your are connecting. Place the bare ends into the connector and screw or twist the connector onto it, making sure no bare wire is left exposed. You should be able to hear or feel a click when it's properly connected.

Tip: For added safety, wrap each finished wiring connection with electrical tape.
