How To Install A Dimmer Switch

 StarbucksStore.com

A dimmer switch can be installed quickly and easily. This is a do it yourself project that most people can handle. Once done, you can control the mood of the room by adjusting the amount of light to your taste.

Before you install a dimmer switch, the first step is to locate the circuit breaker in the main panel and turn the power off.

1. Remove the plate cover, usually attached with two small bolts or screws.

2. Remove the existing switch which is usually attached to the box with a couple of bolts. Use a circuit tester before going any further. On occasion the main panels can be mislabeled and the power could still be on.

3. Loosen the wires and dismantle and discard the old switch.

4. If your new dimmer switch has already been wired, connect the switch wiring to the wall wiring by making sure they are stripped and align them evenly. Next use a wire nut and twist it over the exposed wiring. You will get a secure connection because the wires will twist. For added safety, wrap electrical tape from the top of the wire nut down to about of one inch of the wiring.

If the dimmer switch your are installing is not pre-wired, using needlenose pliers and a screwdriver securely attach the wiring to the terminals.

Dimmer switches vary in style and design. They usually come with instructions. Make sure to check the instructions to make sure no additional installation work is needed.

5. Carefully place the dimmer switch into the box, making sure the wiring is still secure and fits into the wall box. Mount the dimmer by bolting it onto the box. Replace the wall plate and attach the knob or dial to the dimmer.

6. With the dimmer switch set at the off position, turn on the power supply and test the switch.

Enjoy your new lighting!
