Dear DIY Today,

I have several holes in my sheetrock. I'm not sure about how to patch a hole in drywall. A couple of the holes go about 5" across. What's the easiest way to fix a hole in sheetrock?

To repair a hole in drywall you first need to cut a larger opening in the sheetrock where the existing hole is located. Using a sheetrock saw cut the opening into a rectangular shape.

Next you'll need to make some blocks to nail on to. Using pieces of 2X4 you'll need to cut them to the measurements to fit between the existing wall frame. Move any insulation out of the way and place them into the wall cavity and nail them to the wall frame.

Now that you have something to nail or screw the drywall patch into you need to take a piece or sheetrock and using a utility knife cut out a piece to match the measurements of the hole in the drywall that you just squared.  Cut through the drywall on it's finished side and then snap it to create the break. Remove any excess paper from the back side.

Place the patch in the square opening you cut and secure it with drywall screws or nails.

Attach drywall tape over the seams and to apply a joint compound over the tape on the patched area. Don't forget to cover the nail or screw heads. Let it dry and then sand until smooth.
