How To Repair A Crack In A Concrete Driveway

Repairing cracks in a concrete driveway is a do it yourself project the average individual can handle. It's best to repair the cracks soon, before they have a chance to expand and get larger.

For cracks less than 1/8" wide:

You can patch them using a concrete sealer. Follow the manufacturers instructions and make sure you fill the crack as deeply as you can. Allow it to completely dry before using your driveway.

For larger driveway cracks:

In order for the cement to set properly, the larger driveway cracks need to be widened at the bottom. Grab your goggles, a cold chisel and a small sledgehammer. Starting at one end of the crack, insert the chisel into it at an angle and start chipping at the bottom to widen it. Keep working your through the entire length of the driveway crack.

Remove any pieces of concrete debris and use a brush to get rid of the smaller pieces.

To fill the crack, you could use a mixture of portland cement to sand, following the package instructions. Fill the crack completely by using a trowel, making sure there are no air pockets. Once the crack is filled, use a float to smooth the surface area.

Another method of filling the driveway crack is with a pre-made concrete patch cement. You can find it at your local home improvement store. Make sure the crack is cleaned and completely dry before applying the patching cement. Apply the patch cement making sure to fill the entire area of the driveway crack. Smooth the surface area and allow to completely dry before using the driveway.
