How To Install A Cobblestone Driveway

Laying a cobblestone driveway is a DIY project the average person can do with a little time and patience. A cobblestone driveway is typically made of granite and you will be the neighbor's envy as it will be much more attractive than traditional concrete.

Granite cobblestone is dense, making it easier to remove stains. It is a extremely hard rock, making it durable and long lasting. Cobblestone driveways are fairly low maintenance and can be laid in mortar or installed dry.

How to lay a cobblestone driveway:

1. The driveway will need to be shoveled to a depth of about 6 inches. A slope of 1/4" per foot will be needed for drainage. It's best to start from the top, near the garage opening, and work your way down. Use a level to check your work.

2. Once shoveled, use a tamping tool and tamp the soil.

3. Using a wheelbarrow, begin adding gravel to the area. Distribute the gravel evenly using a rake.

4. Again, using your wheelbarrow, add a layer of sand on top of the gravel. This will serve as the bed the granite cobblestone will lay on and also allow proper drainage. Using a tamping tool, tamp the sand firmly.

5. Lay the cobblestones by firmly placing them in the sand. Align them closely and evenly.

6. Once your cobblestone driveway has been laid, add additional sand in the gaps between the cobblestones and tamp again.

7. Using a garden hose, spray the entire driveway with water and allow to thoroughly dry before using.
