How to Arrange Living Room Furniture for

Move it Out!

The living room is one of the most popular rooms in the home. Many people use the living room just as they would a family room for visiting, entertaining, and for kicking back and relaxing with friends and family, but the room designed for living is not always ideally arranged. Instead of arranging the furniture for comfortable conversation, many people literally line the walls while leaving the center of the space open and barren. In very small living rooms this arrangement is ideal and sometimes the only option, but in larger living rooms it is not the ideal layout for conversing with family and guests. With the following easy decorating solutions, you can make your living area more comfortable, warmer, and better arranged for conversation with designer style.

Begin by Getting Rid of the Clutter

Nothing brings down the overall look of a space quite like clutter. No matter how minor the clutter, it detracts from the entire area and makes it appear unkempt and unorganized. Before arranging living room furniture, move out the clutter. Get rid of old newspapers, invest in a magazine rack, and have the kids put away their toys. Less is more when decorating, and once the clutter is gone, you can begin arranging furnishings to maximize living room space.

Move the Furniture Out

Instead of taking up every inch of wall space by lining the area with furniture and living room accessories, move the furniture away from the walls. If possible, create enough space to comfortably walk behind furnishings. Gone are the days of lining the walls and leaving the center of the room open. It is much more visually appealing and more appropriate for conversation when the furniture is moved out from the walls. Bring people closer together by bringing the furniture closer together.

Coffee Table Placement

A coffee table is a useful and practical piece of furniture - if it is properly placed. More often than not, people place the coffee table in front of a single piece of furniture such as a sofa or a love seat. Consider centering the coffee table in the living room, and place the furniture around it. Allow at least eighteen inches between the coffee table and each piece of furniture. This arrangement will enable everyone to use the coffee table, and when attractively decorated with a statue, a flower arrangement, or other eye-catching décor, it will become the focal point of the space.

Cut Off the Corners

Instead of arranging living room furniture in a basic rectangular or square formation, try cutting off the corners by angling the chairs and side tables. This maximizes circulation and conversation while softening sharp corners. This arrangement is much more visually appealing, and your living room will feel welcoming and comfortable as well as stylish.

Rearranging the furniture is the most inexpensive and easiest way to change the entire look of the room. With careful planning and creativity, your living room can look as stylish as those portrayed in high-end home décor magazines. Best of all, moving the furniture out from the walls will encourage interaction and conversation with family and friends.
