The durability, cost-effectiveness and versatility of concrete have made it popular in commercial and residential construction. Statistics show that the US cement industry is on the rise and the cement-to-construction ratio has a positive impact on cement usage in the USA.

Architects and developers have discovered that concrete is reliable and durable, therefore, ideal for walls, floors, pools, patios, pillars and columns. Concrete coatings are decorative, protective and improve longevity and strength of the concrete. They help turn dull and colorless concrete into a noticeably colorful design element.

The appearance of a concrete surface is enhanced with the help of acid-etch stains, color mixtures and etchings.

Water based concrete stains, composed of acrylic resins are used as coatings. They penetrate deep into the concrete surface and provide color and protection against pollutant. They resist fading and abrasion and are easy to apply. They are also compliant with air quality regulations and have a very low volatile organic compound content.

Prior to coating, a concrete surface should be clean, dry and free of any oil, dirt, paint or surface defects. Elastomeric coatings, a thick, elastic film, allow moisture and vapor from within the concrete to escape. This prevents any hairline crack, patches or blistering. Elastomeric coatings are also available in different textures and a wide variety of colors. A concrete block surfacer is used to enhance a concrete surface by providing a stable, uniform foundation for filling pores. Oil-modified urethane, easy to handle and with excellent leveling characteristics is a popular concrete coating.

When concrete is added in layers, bonding agents are used to coat the existing layer of cement. While this type of bonding is not recommended for durability, it is frequently used in renovations and in road repair.

With appropriate coating concrete is rendered corrosion resistant to a significant degree and can last several hundred years depending how exposed it is to natural elements.
