How to Repair a Split Carpet Seam

It's not too difficult to repair a rip or split seam in carpet. Sometimes where carpet is joined it will eventually wear down causing the seam to split. Moving heavy furniture across carpet can cause it to rip. Once you discover you have a seam that is coming apart it needs to be fixed before the carpet fibers begin to fray.

There are a couple of methods of repairing a ripped or split carpet seam.

Method 1. You'll need to purchase some adhesive carpet tape. Lift up one side of the carpet where it is torn or split. Using a pen draw a line along the edge of the side that is still on the floor. Next you need to measure the length of the torn area and cut a strip of the carpet tape. Lift up both edges of the split carpet. Place the tape over the line you have drawn. Make sure it's centered.  Next, place the carpet over the tape, squeezing the sides together so they meet. Finally, use a rolling pin over the patched area. Apply some pressure to it and roll the pin up and down the length of the repaired split in the carpet.

Method 2: For this application you will need to purchase some seam adhesive. Pull up one side of the torn carpet. Carefully apply the adhesive to the back of the carpet. Make sure the adhesive does not get on the carpet fibers as it can discolor and damage it. Lift the other side of the split carpet and coat the back of it. Place both edges on the floor or padding and align them together. Smooth out any wrinkles or air pockets. Place a heavy object on top of the repaired area and allow to thoroughly dry before walking on it.
