How To Measure Carpet For Stairs

Before you install carpet on your stairs, the stairs need to be measured:

Straight Stairs

1. Using a tape measure, start at the inside edge of the tread and going across and down to the bottom of the riser, make a measurement. Add 2 inches to accommodate for the padding that will be installed underneath and for step curvature.

2. Count the total number of steps, including the one you just measured.

3. Multiply the total number of steps by the measurements you just did for the first tread and riser. Record your calculation.

4. Next, you need to measure the width of the stairs. If they are of different widths, you'll need to measure the widest step. Add an additional 2" for padding. Again, write down your measurements.

Winding or Spiral Stairs

1. At the widest area, measure the step from the inside edge of the tread down to the bottom of the riser, as above. Again, add 2". Unfortunately there will be some wastage but it can't be avoided. If the steps are of various sizes they will need to be measured individually. Record your figures.

2. Count the total number of steps and multiply your measurements.

3. Measure the width. Again, add at least 2" and write down your measurements.
