DIY Today,

How do I install a vanity. The one in my bathroom is scratched and faded. Do you think this is a do it yourself project or is it too difficult?

Installing a bathroom vanity is not too difficult and it requires a skill level of medium.

1. Remove your old vanity by first disconnecting the plumbing and removing the sink. Loosen the screws from the wall and move the old vanity out of the bathroom.

2. Remove any debris and clean the walls and floor areas.

3. You're going to need to cut holes in the back of the new vanity before you can install it. This will require careful measurements. First measure the height and width of the new vanity and mark it on the wall with a pencil, drawing lines both vertically and horizontally. Measure the pipe locations and draw it on the back of the vanity where the holes will need to be cut. When cutting the holes for pipes make sure to give yourself a little extra space to ensure the pipes will fit.

4. It's time to install the bathroom vanity. Carefully slide it into position. You may need to remove the doors to line it up with the pipes and to prevent damage. Before you attach it to the wall the next step is to use a level to make sure it's square. When using shims to adjust the level make sure you remove the ends and depending on the height of the shims you may need to install moulding after the vanity is installed. Once it's level you need to fasten it into the wall studs using screws and washers. The vanity should have a nailer board on the back that you will use to fasten it to the wall.

5. Attach the countertop using a medium bead of caulk around the perimeter edges of the vanity and press into place. Install the doors on the vanity. Finally, install the fixtures and the sink.
