Scott D. from Arlington, VA wrote: Dear DIY Today, About every six months I need to unclog the shower drain. It's always been and chore and I'm wondering what is the easiest way to unclog a shower drain. Unclogging a shower drain is never a pleasant task but if you don't want to end up standing in water several inches deep it's a chore that needs to be done. 1. Remove the floor plate by unscrewing it and prying it off from the edge if necessary. |

2. Before you get started try loosening the clogged drain with a solution of 1 cup of baking soda to 2 cups water. Once its settled into the drain add 1 cup of pure vinegar. Let this solution soak for an hour. 3. Loosen the clogged shower drain by using a plunger. 4. Take a coat hanger and bend it so there is a small hook at the end of it. Dig out whatever is clogging the drain, usually hair. 5. If the drain is still clogged try using the plunger again. 6. As a last resort you can use a commercial drain cleaner, following the instructions carefully. 7. Once the drain is unclogged reattach the drain plate and run water through it for a minute or so.
