Dear DIY Today,

What's the easiest way to install a bathroom exhaust fan? I'm a do it yourself person and I figure this is a project I can do myself rather than hiring a professional.

Installing a bathroom exhaust fan is not a difficult task. The easiest way to do this is to install a fan/light fixture. You'll need to start by turning off the power to the circuit before beginning any work. Next you'll have to climb into the attic and locate the bathroom light. Once you've found it you need to disconnect the electrical connections and remove it. Your new bathroom exhaust fan is going to need to be securely attached to braces or joists.

If needed you may have to measure and install a 2X4 between the joists to create a place to attach the bathroom fan unit. Once done, attach the new bathroom fan using the instructions that came with it. Make sure the fan housing is secured.

The electric connections will need to be done next. Usually the wiring is attached with the same color scheme (black to black and white to white). Locate the grounding clip and attach the ground wire. After you have placed the wires in the housing box then go ahead and attach the cover. If you have any problems refer to the instructions that came with it.

The exhaust bath fan will need to be vented. The best way to do this is to locate the nearest eave vent or soffit vent. Try not to vent it through a roof vent. You'll need to use appropriate length of flex duct, which is made of flexible aluminum or plastic. Using a clamp attach it to the vent shroud and to the exterior vent.

Check your instructions for details regarding how far the attic insulation should be from your bathroom exhaust fan.

Okay, you're done in the attic. Go to the bathroom and install the bathroom exhaust fan cover. Turn the power back on leading to the circuit, flip the light switch on and enjoy your new fan.
