Dear DIY Today,

This year we are going to use a swamp cooler instead of the standard air conditioner. I plan to do it myself but the problem is that I don't know how to install a swamp cooler. Any ideas?

Swamp coolers are an excellent choice for climates such as your area. This is a do it yourself project that can be done in a day. Since I don't know how you want to mount your swamp cooler I'll show you how to install it on the roof.

These are general guidelines and aren't meant to be a substitute for the manufacturers instructions. You'll need to make a platform out of wood for the evaporative cooler to sit on. Next you'll need to cut an opening in the roof.

To insure the opening will match up you could drive a nail through the roof from inside the attic to mark where the ductwork is located. When using your reciprocating saw, make your first cut in the same direction as the ridge of the roof. If you run into any framing simply stop and continue cutting the opposite direction.  Once done securely attach the platform to the roof.

Install the swamp cooler onto the platform using the manufacturers instructions. Once mounted hook up the tubing using a saddle valve on the water supply line. The electrical wiring needs to be installed per manufacturers instructions as swamp cooler units vary.

The ductwork needs to be connected next and hopefully you have cut the opening in the roof in the correct location or ductwork adjustments will have to be made.

Once everything is hooked up turn on the water and electricity leading to the newly installed swamp cooler and check the water level by making adjustments to the float.
