Dear DIY Today,

My air conditioner doesn't turn off after it cools the house - it keeps running. Can you give me some do it yourself ideas?

I don't know what type of air conditioner you have but here are some general tips and can help it to turn off properly:

1. Start with turning up the thermostat. I know, it's an obvious idea but make sure it's set properly. If you have central air conditioning and if it's set properly than here's another thing to try. Only do this if you're comfortable with working on electrical parts. Make sure the power to the air conditioner is turned off.

Unscrew and remove the thermostat cover. Loosen the wire connected to the Y terminal and set it aside so the bare wire is not  touching anything. Turn the power back on. Hold the wire by its insulated coating and touch it to the R terminal. If your air conditioner starts working it means you have a short in your thermostat.

2. Oil the motor.

3. Check the airflow by removing the cover off the condenser and check for any blockage of the airflow. Remove any debris with a shop vacuum.

4. Check your filter and replace if needed.
