Dear DIY Today,

My ducts are making noises when I turn on my heating/cooling system. I'm not kidding you, sometimes it wakes me at night. Do you have any ideas for making my ductwork quiet?

Metal ducts make different types of noises. Sometimes you can try to figure out what's wrong by the sound that's coming from the duct.

One problem is when you have cold air rushing into a warm duct it changes the size of the metal and can cause popping or pinging sounds as the temperature changes. One suggestion is to use rubber padding where the duct makes contact with the wood.

Another remedy to repair loud air ducts is with insulation. The ducts are wrapped with foil fiberglass insulation. This can quiet the noise and also save you money on your utility bill. Another idea is you could insert acoustic duct lining, although this choice is a more difficult task.

Take a look at the air register to make sure it's not blocked. Blockage can cause a change in the pressure and create noise.

Sometimes the noise in the ducts is coming from the sound of a loud blower. You may want to check the belt on the blower to make sure it's tight.
