How To Fix And Repair A Squealing
And Noisy Air Conditioner
By Jerry Holt

Dear DIY Today,

My air conditioner is noisy at times making a squealing sound. What could the problem be and how to I fix it.

It sounds like the reason your air conditioner is squealing is due to a loose belt. This happens on a forced air heat pump when it slips.

First you need to turn off the power source to the unit.

You can check the belt by removing the cover and locating the blower motor. Loosen the bolts that adjust the tension for the belt.

At this point I would recommend replacing the belt rather than just retightening it to save yourself time in the long run. Install the new belt and adjust it to the proper tension.

Next turn your air conditioning back on and listen for any noisy or squealing sounds. If the noise persists you have mechanical issues that will require the services of a professional.
