Troubleshooting An Air Conditioner
DIY Repairs and Advice

My air conditioner won't turn on. It normally turns on automatically. What could be the problem?

Here are some DIY troubleshooting tips and advice to help you to get your air conditioner to turn on automatically:

1. I would check the power source to begin with. Sometimes the breaker needs to be reset. Look for the electrical fuse panel and find the breaker or fuse for your air conditioner. If you can't find it look for a secondary panel. Once located you will need to reset the breaker switch or replace the fuse.

2. Set the temperature on the thermostat to it's coolest setting and wait a few minutes to see if the air conditioner starts.

3. Check to see if your thermostat working properly. Only do this if you're comfortable with working on electrical parts. Make sure the power to the air conditioner is turned off. Unscrew and remove the thermostat cover. Loosen the wire connected to the Y terminal and set it aside so the bare wire is not  touching anything. Turn the power back on. Hold the wire by its insulated coating and touch it to the R terminal. If your air conditioner starts working it means you have a short in your thermostat.

Unfortunately if none of these ideas work you will probably need to call a professional to come over and take a look at your air conditioning unit.
