Dear DIY Today,

I am going to have central air conditioning installed in my new home. How is central air conditioning installed and what should I look for?

You want your air conditioner to perform efficiently without unnecessary  repairs. Below is a list of what is required to correctly install a central air conditioner.

1. The thermostat needs to be installed away from windows, kitchens or other areas that may be heat sources.

2. The condensing unit needs to be placed in a shady area and should be located where the noise will be least heard.

3. Some day the evaporator coil will need to be cleaned so there should be an access door installed in the duct.

4. Whenever possible the duct work should not be installed in the attic but within the walls of the area to be air conditioned. In addition the ducts need to be sized properly.

5. The manufacturers specifications need to be followed to ensure the proper air flow and refrigerant charge.

6. The duct work should be sealed with mastic and insulated.

7. If repairs are needed in the future there should be enough indoor space when initially installing the air conditioning system so there is room to work on it.

8. In order to ensure the proper flow of warm and cold air there needs to be adequate supply registers installed.
