Dear DIY Today,

My room air conditioner has an odor when it's turned on. Is there any way of getting removing the odor coming from my air conditioner?

Chances are pretty good that the odor coming from your room air conditioner is coming from the base pan. Sometimes algae growth creates a formation on the pan.

First, make sure your air conditioner power supply is disconnected.

Your room air conditioner base pan needs to be cleaned with a scratch pad and a solution to get rid of the algae formation. At this point you should also check the air conditioner filter. Depending on the type of odor the filter may have absorbed too much of it and may not be good any longer.

Once you have the filter replaced and the algae formation cleaned off of the room air conditioner base pan you should use an algaecide tablet in the pan to help reduce algae growths. These tablets can be found at your local home improvement store. Follow the directions and hopefully this will prevent odor from coming out of your room air conditioner.
