How To Replace A Broken Or Cracked Roof Tile

Dear DIY Today:

I was recently doing some work on my ceramic tile roof and accidentally stepped on and broke a couple of the roofing tiles. Can you tell me how to replace the roofing tiles?

Luckily for you Roger, replacing roof tiles is not too difficult of a project. As you well know the main problem with repairing a tile roof is walking on it, and possibly cracking additional tiles while trying to make a repair. I know, I've done it myself! Basically all that needs done is to pry out the broken or cracked tile and replace it with a new one. I'll show you the steps.

First, you'll need to take a flat pry bar and carefully slide it under the top of the good roof tile that is covering the broken one. Using a second pry bar you'll need to insert it under the adjacent good tile, usually to the left,  that's overlapping the cracked tile. Gently elevate both of the good tiles so you can remove the damaged tile.

Now that we've removed the broken roof tile we need to replace it. If your roof is very old this presents a slight problem in matching the colors as the tile roof has probably faded. If you want, you could remove a older tile from a less visible area of the roof and use it for your repair and install the new one in it's place.

Replacing the broke or cracked roof tile:

Make sure all debris and nails are removed before replacing the roofing tile. Before using adhesive test the new tile by gently sliding it into place to make sure you have a good fit. Spread about 1/8th of an inch of roofing cement along the back of the replacement roof tile and press it into place. Depending on weather conditions it usually takes about one day for the roofing cement to fully dry.

If needed you can apply grout to any cracks or gaps.

Way to go! You're Done!
